A number of Haverfordwest High VC students are making extremely good progress within the sport of Olympic Weightlifting. Some pupils train recreationally to gain physical and well-being benefits, others compete in National competitions both Wales and GB; some have gained Welsh representation competing on the International Stage.

Over the weekend, Dan Davies, year 8 competed at Sport Wales National Sports Centre in the most prestigious Welsh National Weightlifting Competition of the year. It is a senior Competition Open to all throughout the UK. Dan made PB lifts and gained a silver medal in his body weight category. There was an exceptionally large crowd of spectators. Dan was composed and performed to his utmost best.

Gareth Evans presented the medals to this category of athletes. Gareth is the highest ranked GB Weightlifter and in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 he was the first gold medalist not only for weightlifting but for the whole of Team Wales. He has inspired athletes throughout Wales and here in Pembrokeshire.

This year Dan’s achievements have been very impressive. At the Ricoh Arena in Coventry which is the largest GB event, Dan won the u13 British title. In June, he competed for Wales in Austria at the European Junior Battle. He is also a member of the South Wales Talent Squad.

Dan will join fellow Pembrokeshire Weightlifters in his next competition which will be the Welsh Age Groups, held at Bangor University in December.
